Kobe Travel Guide: Beef, Sake, Night Views & Where to Stay
Every eatmono guide to Kobe in one place, written by a team that lives in Hyogo.
Kobe is the capital of Hyogo, the prefecture Expedia ranked No. 2 of its 2027 Destinations of the Year, and it’s the best base for almost any trip in the region. It’s a port city squeezed between the Rokko mountains and Osaka Bay: you can walk from Western-style 19th-century mansions to Japan’s best-known Chinatown to the harbor in under half an hour, then ride up a mountain for one of the country’s most famous night views. Osaka is about 20 minutes away by train, Kyoto about 50.
This Kobe Special collects all of our Kobe guides by theme. Start with the first-timer guide, then go deeper on the parts of the city you care about most.

Eat and Drink in Kobe
Kobe is a food city first. Its most famous export is Kobe beef, a strictly certified brand of Tajima-strain wagyu; read our guides before you book so you know how to spot the real thing. The Nada district on the eastern waterfront is Japan’s largest sake-brewing area, with brewery museums and tasting rooms, and Nankinmachi is the place for street-food dumplings and buns.

Where to Stay in Kobe
Sannomiya is the most convenient base, with the most hotels and direct trains to Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji and Arima. Harborland suits travelers who want sea views; Kitano suits those who want a quieter, more residential feel. For a hot spring night, move to Arima Onsen.
