Hyogo Travel Guide 2027: Kobe, Himeji Castle, Arima Onsen & Awaji Island

Coastline, mountains and castles in one prefecture — planned for you by a team that lives here in Hyogo.

In October 2026, Expedia and Hotels.com published their Unpack ’27 travel trends report and placed Hyogo, Japan at No. 2 of its 2027 Destinations of the Year, with searches up 95% year on year. Expedia called it one of Japan’s most unsung destinations, with coastline, mountains and castles in one stretch. We agree — and we’re a little biased, because eatmono is run from Hyogo.

Most visitors still see Hyogo as a day trip: a Kobe beef lunch, or a quick look at Himeji Castle on the way to Hiroshima. That’s a shame. Hyogo reaches all the way from the Seto Inland Sea to the Sea of Japan, which means one prefecture gives you a cosmopolitan port city, Japan’s finest original castle, two of its most famous hot spring towns, a “castle in the sky,” winter snow crab, and an island with its own whirlpools. This page is our hub for all of it. Start here, then dive into the detailed guides linked below.

Why Hyogo Is Worth More Than a Day Trip in 2027

Three things make Hyogo different from the rest of Kansai. First, variety without long transfers: the sea, the Rokko mountains and an onsen town sit within about 30 minutes of central Kobe, and the Shinkansen puts Himeji roughly 15 minutes from Shin-Kobe. Second, breathing room: Hyogo gives you world-class sights without the crush of Kyoto or Osaka’s busiest districts, which is exactly why Expedia flagged it. Third, food you can only eat properly here: Kobe beef and Tajima beef, Nada sake, Akashi octopus and akashiyaki, Matsuba snow crab from the Sea of Japan coast, Awaji onions, and Tamba black soybeans.

It is also one of the easiest regions in Japan to fit into a first trip. Kobe is about 20 minutes from Osaka by JR special rapid train and roughly 50 minutes from Kyoto, so you can base yourself in Kobe and still see the rest of Kansai — or flip it around and spend two or three nights moving across Hyogo itself.

Hyogo at a Glance: The Five Regions

Kobe & Hanshin: Port City, Mountains and Hot Springs

Kobe is the capital of Hyogo and the natural base for most trips. Squeezed between the Rokko mountains and Osaka Bay, it’s compact enough to walk: the Western-style Ijinkan houses of Kitano on the hillside, Japan’s best-known Chinatown at Nankinmachi in the middle, and the harborfront at Meriken Park and Harborland by the water. Take the ropeway or cable car up Mt Rokko or Mt Maya at dusk for one of Japan’s celebrated night views, then come back down for Kobe beef in Sannomiya. For every Kobe guide in one place, open our Kobe Special.

Arima Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot spring towns, is about 30 minutes from downtown on the other side of the mountains, famous for its rust-colored kinsen (gold) water and clear ginsen (silver) water. East of Kobe, the Hanshin corridor adds the Nada sake breweries, the Takarazuka Revue and Koshien Stadium, home of the Hanshin Tigers.

Harima: Himeji Castle and the Western Coast

Himeji Castle is the reason many travelers first hear about Hyogo, and it deserves the fame: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest of Japan’s original surviving castles, often called the White Heron Castle for its brilliant white plaster walls. Pair it with Kokoen Garden next door, and if you have half a day more, take the ropeway up Mt Shosha to the mountaintop temple complex of Engyoji.

The Harima coast rewards slow travelers too. Akashi is the home of akashiyaki (the soft, egg-rich ancestor of takoyaki) and the Uonotana fish market. Ako is the castle town of the legendary 47 Ronin, and Tatsuno is a quiet, soy-sauce-scented town often called the “Little Kyoto of Harima.”

Tajima: Kinosaki Onsen, the Castle in the Sky and Snow Crab

Northern Hyogo faces the Sea of Japan and feels like a different country from Kobe. Kinosaki Onsen is the star: a willow-lined canal town where you stroll between seven public bathhouses in a yukata and wooden geta. In winter, the coast is famous for Matsuba snow crab, and the season (which opens in early November) is the best excuse to book a ryokan dinner.

Inland, the Takeda Castle Ruins sit on a mountaintop and, on cold autumn mornings, appear to float above a sea of clouds — hence the nickname “Castle in the Sky.” Our Takeda Castle Ruins guide explains when and where to see it. Nearby Izushi is a compact castle town known for sara-soba, buckwheat noodles served on small plates. Further inland, the Kannabe Highlands around an extinct volcano offer skiing in winter and hiking, paragliding and camping the rest of the year, and Hachi-Kita has some of the closest ski slopes to Osaka and Kobe.

Tamba: Old Castle Towns and Country Food

Tamba is Hyogo’s countryside, about an hour from Osaka. Tamba-Sasayama has a samurai quarter and a reconstructed castle palace hall, and it’s famous for seasonal food: big black soybeans, chestnuts, and botan-nabe wild boar hotpot in the colder months. The nearby village of Tachikui is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with family potteries you can still visit.

Awaji Island: Bridges, Whirlpools and Architecture

Awaji Island is connected to Kobe by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and to Shikoku by the Onaruto Bridge. From the southern tip you can take a sightseeing cruise out to the Naruto whirlpools. The island is also known for sweet onions, beaches, flower parks, and Tadao Ando’s Awaji Yumebutai with its terraced Hyakudan-en garden. Highway buses from Kobe’s Sannomiya make it an easy day trip, though a night or two lets you slow down. Read the full Awaji Island travel guide.
